That pain in your back!

“Oh no, my back hurts!” First thing that comes to mind should be your chiropractor – although we do much more than just low back pain – we are definitely the go to when you have aches and pains in your low back!

 

 

What is it?

Most of the time when your low back hurts, it’s called mechanical (or non-specific) low back pain. What does this really mean? It means that the cause is not due to a serious pathology or one specific reason. The simple answer is the cause is related to your muscles, bones, joints, ligaments discs or nerves – pretty much any of the structures in the low back. Sometimes it can also cause shooting pain that travels down the lower limb and possibly as far down as the foot!

 

Mechanical low back pain can be acute (less than six weeks), sub acute (between six and twelve weeks) or chronic (longer than twelve weeks). It can be as simple as a small ache, or unfortunately many of you know, it can be debilitating and could prevent you from going to work or doing things around the house.

 

What are the causes?

The cause can be due to trauma, or a sprain/strain, improper posture, or just randomly out of nowhere! We also have to understand that we like to reduce our problems to a specific point (it’s THIS muscle or THIS joint, etc.) we have to take a step back and take a holistic approach. If a joint is the reason for low back pain, then all the muscles that attach to that joint will also be affected, and this also means that the ligaments in the area will also be affected. Therefore, we have to treat all the structures in your lower back.

 

What can we do to help you?

At Hamilton Chiropractic we have literally helped hundreds of people with low back pain. The main tool we use, is manual therapy. Treatment comes in the form of both chiropractic treatment and massage therapy. To address mechanical low back pain, we must deal with the cause of the problem, the muscles, the joints and the ligaments. The end goal of treatment is to get the joints moving properly and getting all the muscles in the area to relax to reduce pain and get you back to living your everyday life! Also don’t be surprised if Dr. Ashor Sworeho or Andrea Arnold RMT give you some exercises to do at home, we will do our part at the clinic, but you have to do your part at home.
